Dr. Geoffrey Henebry of SDSU is a landscape ecologist whose basic & applied research focuses on using geospatial time series to characterize, model, and understand diverse ecological and biogeophysical phenomena.  Current research projects include:

  • Storms, forms, and complexity of the urban canopy: How land use, settlement patterns, and the shapes of cities influence severe weather (NASA IDS; PI: Henebry);
  • Change in our MIDST: Detection and analysis of land surface dynamics in North and South America using multiple sensor datastreams (NASA Science of Terra & Aqua; PI: Henebry);
  • How Environmental Change in Central Asian Highlands Impacts High Elevation Communities (NASA LCLUC; PI: Henebry); 
  • An integrated system for epidemiological application of earth observation technologies (NIH/NIAID, PI: Wimberly, SDSU);
  • Climatic and anthropogenic forcing of wetland landscape connectivity in the Great Plains (NSF Macrosystems Biology; PI: Wright, UMN-D);
  • Development and validation of a global land surface phenology product from NPP VIIRS for EOS-MODIS continuity (NASA NPP Science Team; PI: Zhang, SDSU).

As a Fulbright Senior Research Fellow at the Brazilian Space Agency in 1993-94, Geoff used imaging radar to investigate flooding patterns in the Pantanal Matogrossense, the largest wetland on the planet. He is a member of NASA's Land Use Land Cover Change Science Team. Geoff entered the field of ecological remote sensing while serving as a post-doctoral fellow with the Konza Prairie Long Term Ecological Research project at Kansas State University. He earned a Ph.D. and a M.S., both in Environmental Sciences, from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a B.A. in Liberal Arts from St. John's College in Santa Fe.

He currently serves on the editorial boards of BioScienceInternational Journal of Biometeorology, and Landscape Ecology, and previously at Ecology/Ecological MonographsConservation Ecology, and Applied Vegetation Science. He is active in the American Geophysical Union (AGU) and the US Chapter of the International Association for Landscape Ecology (US-IALE).
