International Workshop on Malaria Early Warning System Design

GSCE senior scientists Mike Wimberly, Geoff Henebry, and Gabriel Senay, along with collaborators from other SDSU departments and public health organizations in Ethiopia, held the EPIDEMIA co-design workshop at GSCE from July 7-11 2014. The purpose of this workshop was to create an initial software design for the EPIDEMIA computer system as part of a research project supported by the National Institutes of Health. The system will integrate environmental monitoring data from earth observing satellites with epidemiological surveillance data to provide a malaria early warning system for the Amhara Region of Ethiopia. The workshop included training sessions on satellite remote sensing, ecological forecasting, and malaria epidemiology as well as a software requirements analysis facilitated by Dr. Yi Liu from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Outcomes of the workshop included a prioritized list of software requirements and a software development plan that will guide the EPIDEMIA project over the next year.
