Continuity of the Web Enabled Landsat Data (WELD) Product Record in the LDCM Era: Product Data Processing, Evaluation and Distribution Strategies

This proposal solicits membership to the Landsat Science Team for Dr. Roy who, with his co-investigators, will investigate (i) forward WELD product continuity using the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) data stream, involving assessment and development of WELD processing algorithms specific to the LDCM sensor specifications and data format, (ii) product quality assessment, product validation, and characterization of the consistency of the resulting long term (Landsat ETM+ to LDCM) WELD product time series, (iii) assessment of the utility of this data record to develop "higher-level" derived products including Climate Data Records, Earth System Data Records and Essential Climate Variables, and (iv) assessment of the capability for expanding the existing WELD internet product distribution interface to support WELD LDCM products. The proposed research will involve sample WELD LDCM product generation. The sample WELD LDCM products and prototype internet distribution system will be made available to the Landsat Science Team, LDCM engineers and scientific support staff, and USGS and NASA management, for their evaluation, with a view to integration of the recommended relevant research into the Landsat 1-7, Landsat 8 and proposed Landsat 9 operations. These research tasks will involve continued collaboration and liaison with the Landsat Science Team, Landsat and LDCM engineers, USGS EROS distribution personnel and USGS and NASA management, and may lead to recommendations for needed refinements to the LDCM product format, content, and distribution.

The images below show true color weekly WELD product browse images, for the weeks of June, over the conterminous United States (CONUS), defined in the standard WELD Albers projection. Each CONUS browse image pixel was generated from 10 x 10 Landsat 30m pixels. The gaps are where the individual Landsat 8 scenes were too cloudy to provide sufficient ground control points for L1T processing.

The images below show true color monthly WELD product browse images, May 2013, over the conterminous United States (CONUS), showing all 501 CONUS 5000 x 5000 30m pixel WELD tiles and a single WELD tile (h11v11) located over southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. Each CONUS browse image pixel was generated from 10 x 10 Landsat 30m pixels and each tile image pixel corresponds to a single Landsat 30m pixel (the dome feature near the tile center is Ute Mountain, Taos County, New Mexico).

The Landsat 8 product was generated from 632 Landsat 8 OLI images acquired May 1-31 2013. The data gaps occur because of some Landsat 8 L1T reprocessing issues in the first week of May and because the OLI was turned off May 5-9 while a memory issue was fixed onboard the spacecraft. Note, this is our first CONUS Landsat 8 WELD run, we are currently refining the Landsat 8 processing algorithms ...

The Landsat 7 product was generated from 795 Landsat 7 ETM+ images acquired May 1-31 2013 using the Version 1.5 processing algorithms. The stripes are due to the Landsat 7 SLC-off issue.
